KARL GRANDIN

Swedish multidisciplinary artist and designer Karl Grandin has been involved in everything from conceptual pizza, record covers, fanzines, popular jeans and lately - beer. With this collection of prints, released under the title Hypnogoga, we get to peek into his creative mind and its colourful worlds.

We first encountered Karl in 2002 on a project we were involved with in Tokyo. He was working with his longtime friend and collaborator Bjorn Atldax as the design duo Vår.

In 2011 Karl met beer lover Henok Fentie and Omnipollo was born. From the outset Omnipollo was to be no ordinary beer company. One of their unique assets is to have art as an important a concept as the beer. Using the kind of production values normally reserved for fine art. The artwork in this series centres on Karl’s work for Omnipollo from the first bottle to the present day.

Letters, colours and objects intertwine with each other making the beer look more like an artwork than an informative container. The design language recalls the experimental 1960’s and -70’s where innovators such as Archigram and Hipgnosis created a playfulness that challenged the conventional.

Hypnagoga is the Swedish translation of the word Hypnagogia, which is a type of sensory hallucination that can be experienced while falling asleep. In the dreamy worlds of Karl Grandin, the title represents our perception of art and pictures and how it is transformed in our brains into something “real”.
