About Us | Silk Screen Printing

Silk Screen Printing, or serigraphy as it is sometimes known, is an ancient art with origins dating back thousands of years. The basic principles of the technique remain unchanged to this day, the only thing that has altered are the materials used. Traditionally screen printing was largely an industrial process, then in the 1960s Andy Warhol began using it to produce iconic images such as his Campbell Soup Tins and his portraits of Elvis and Marilyn Monroe and in doing so brought the practice to the attention of the art world. Although not immediately accepted by the art critics and museum curators of the day, it quickly gained popularity among the pop art and then the wider art fraternity. Over the years it has become the accepted medium for producing high quality art prints, as the artist is able to retain control of the end result throughout the print making process.
Recently much has been made of the merits of high end digital bubble jet, or giclee prints as they are sometimes called. As this technology has become more widely available it has even been claimed by some that silk screen printing will eventually die out. However whilst it is true that giclee prints produce decent reproductions we remain unconvinced of their long term provenance as legitimate artworks and for this reason we have always held back from going down this increasingly travelled road.
We are delighted to offer Silk Screen Prints of our work that we believe truly reflects our dedication to quality, artisanship and our motto “hand b 4 mouse”.
The Silk Screen Prints issued by Scrawl Collective are guaranteed limited editions. Each is checked and approved by the artist. All the inks are lightfast, hand mixed and of the highest quality, and are individually proofed and passed before the run is allowed to go ahead.
Each print is embossed with the Scrawl Collective seal, numbered and signed by the artist. With every purchase we issue a certificate of authenticity in the name of the buyer as a guarantee of the prints provenance. A copy of every certificate we issue is kept on file at Scrawl HQ so if you lose your certificate ownership can be verified and a new one issued.
